Introduction to the country and region

The Republic of Kiribati (pronounced keer-ree-bahss) is an island state located in the Central Pacific approximately where the equator and the international dateline intersect.  The country is made up of 33 atolls and reef islands spread out over 3.5 million km² of ocean. The total land area of 810 km² is found in three island groups: the Gilbert, the Line and the Phoenix group, with the majority of the population living in the Gilbert. The inhabitants of Kiribati, the I-Kiribati, speak one language – also called I-Kiribati – and share a common cultural heritage.

Brazil is a country located in South America that is well known for its natural beauty. Brazil has a coastline of over 7,400 Km, 20% of the world’s biodiversity within different ecosystems, and 3.6 million km2 of the Amazon Rainforest.

Its climate is predominantly tropical with warm temperatures making the country a very attractive place. The 8.5 million km2 that comprise Brazil is divided into 5 regions with very different sociopolitical characteristics:  North, Northeast, Center-west, Southeast and South.

Introduction to the country and region

Zimbabwe is a land locked country in south central Africa. It has a total area of 150,873 square miles (390,759 km2) (slightly smaller than California). Zimbabwe shares its eastern border with Mozambique, southern border with South Africa, western border with Botswana and northern border with Zambia.

Estimated population is 12.3 million (2007), growth rate 0.6%, birth rate 27.7/1000. Although Zimbabwe gained political independence from British rule in 1980, the majority of the country’s land remained in the hands of non-indigenous white farmers, despite the fact that they made up just 1% of the population. This was a source of tension in the years that followed, and in 1999 the Government began to forcibly evict white farmers from their land.

 Introduction to Country and Region

Location and geography:  Rwanda is a land locked country located on the border of Eastern and Central Africa  It is small at 26,338 kms and its neighbours are Democratic Republic or Congo (DRC) to the west, Tanzania to the east, Uganda to the north and Burundi to the south. about 120 km south of the equator.

Rwanda has incredibly varied terrain due to its position on the eastern border of the Albertine Rift Valley.  Within this small country are numerous hills and valleys.  Other topical variants include mountainous southwestern forests, a large inland western body lake, Lake Kirn and five volcanoes in the northwest.  The country flattens to a plain land gradually sloping to the east.  Here in the east temperatures increase and altitudes decrease to plains, swamps and lakes on the eastern border.
